XXXTentacion's Death Sparks Disturbing Internet Challenge
The #XXXTentacionChallenge has sparked furious debate on social media.
From eating Tide pods to snorting cinnamon, the internet has been the birthplace of numerous disturbing challenges over the years.
Mocking someone’s death, however, may be new territory.
Following the killing of 20-year-old rapper XXXTentacion on Monday, social media users concocted a new internet challenge honoring — or rather, dishonoring — the slain rapper.
With the hashtag “XXXTentacionChallenge,” a number of Twitter users have posted photos of themselves playing dead — in some cases, sitting slumped over in the front seat of a car with their head back and mouth open — apparently mimicking the position XXXTentacion died in. The rapper was reportedly shot while sitting in the driver’s seat of his car while leaving a motorcycle dealership in Florida.
The so-called challenge was created the day after XXXTentacion’s death and has sparked outrage among his fans.
“Y’all tortured and bullied this man while he was alive and now y’all won’t even let him rest in f*cking peace. I’m convinced y’all won’t be satisfied until one of ya friends die and people make fun of their death,” one Twitter user wrote.
“The whole #XXXtentacionChallenge or whatever is super gross. If u participate I got no respect for you. Why make fun of someone dying? I’m disappointed and disgusted,” another tweeted.
One user who took part in the challenge later claimed to have a deeper purpose for his post, writing in one tweet, “If anything I’m bringing attention to his death and making people more aware of the govt cover ups.”
Controversy has surrounded XXXTentacion following his death. The rapper was previously accused of abusing a former girlfriend and was arrested and charged with aggravated battery of a pregnant woman, domestic battery by strangulation, false imprisonment, and witness-tampering in 2016. He pleaded not guilty and was awaiting trial when he was killed.
XXXTentacion’s mother Cleopatra Bernard announced on Thursday that her son had been expecting a child before he was killed.
