Florida Mom Of 5 Is Allegedly Killed By Husband, Her High School Sweetheart
Eric Harris turned the gun on himself after shooting wife Shanica, police allege.
They were once high school sweethearts, but the love story of Shanica and Eddie Harris took a tragic turn Saturday night when Shanica was allegedly killed at the hands of her partner of 33 years, police said.
Miami-Dade police say Eddie shot and killed his wife in their Liberty City home during a heated argument before turning the gun on himself.
Police were called to the couple’s home around 8:51 p.m. Saturday night after receiving a 911 call about a shooting inside a home, The Miami Herald reports.
When officers arrived at the home, they saw two men fleeing from the residence. The men told officers that two children remained inside, along with Shanica and her husband, who was reportedly armed, local station WPLG reports.
Special Response Team members were able to get the two children, ages 6 and 9, out of the house through a window.
After entering the home, police found Shanica dead and her husband suffering from what appeared to be a self-inflicted wound. Eddie was taken to the Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center, The Miami Herald reports.
His current condition is unknown, according to PEOPLE.
Shanica’s sister Thomasina Goddard told WPLG Eddie had “barricaded himself in the house” and shot her sister. She identified the two children in the house as her “grandniece and grandnephew.”
Shanica and Eddie were the parents to five adult children and had been together since Shanica was 15 years old.
“My sister was the sweetest girl you would’ve known,” Goodard said. “She worked very hard for her kids and family.”
The family endured another tragedy nearly three years ago when the couple’s 19-year-old son, Eddie Harris Jr., was shot and killed while walking down a street at 1 p.m. on January 29, 2016, PEOPLE reports.
