Man Flees Hospital After Story Of Elderly Father's Accidental Death Falls Apart, Police Say
Michael Yakubec claimed his dad, John Yakubec, fell in the shower, but police didn't think things quite added up, like the fact he was brought to the hospital fully clothed and dry.
An Indiana man has been accused of killing his elderly father, who he claimed died from a fall in the shower.
Michael Yakubec, 50, told staff at Chicago's Stroger Hospital Thursday that his father, 80-year-old John Yakubec, sustained head injuries in an accidental fall. He claimed to have come home and discovered his father unconscious in the shower, according to the Chicago Post-Tribune. John Yakubec died later that night.
However, authorities were quickly skeptical of Michael Yakubec's story. His father was brought to the hospital clothed and dry and his injuries weren't consistent with a fall, according to medical experts. His death was ruled a homicide on Saturday and police zeroed in on Michael Yakubec as the suspect.
Before his dad’s death was even determined to be murder, Michael Yakubec asked if he needed a lawyer while chatting with police at the hospital and police said he left the hospital in the middle of that conversation. After fleeing the hospital, he was later found by police in a locked room in an area home, according to the Chicago Post-Tribune. Police tracked him down to that location after spotting his car and through the use of a K-9 unit.
Blood was found in the bathroom of the Yakubec home, the scene of the alleged crime, according to WLS in Chicago. Two rifles were confiscated from the younger Yakubec’s bedroom.
Police arrested Michael Yakubec and charged him with murder. He is being held without bond. It’s not clear if he has a lawyer who can speak on his behalf at this time.
