Woman Allegedly Killed By Her Son And His Friend Was Beaten With Baseball Bat And Had Her Throat Slit, Cops Say
Matthew Dempsey and Daniel Saucedo, both 18, have been charged with capital murder for the death of Mary Dempsey.
A woman allegedly killed by her teenage son and his friend was beaten with a baseball bat and had her throat slit, according to recently released court records.
Matthew Dempsey and Daniel Saucedo, both 18, were this week charged with capital murder for the killing of 53-year-old Mary Dempsey, who allegedly walked in on them while they were burglarizing her home.
Dempsey reportedly told law enforcement that he and Saucedo went to his mother’s house either Monday night or early Tuesday morning, according to an arrest affidavit for Saucedo viewed by the San Antonio Express-News. The teens entered the residence with a key and started to take “items they were going to take from the home,” the affidavit says.
Dempsey had a loaded firearm on him at the time, the Express-News quoted law enforcement as saying.
Dempsey added in the documents that he was in his bedroom and Saucedo was in the kitchen when Mary Dempsey got back home; Dempsey said he beat his mother with a baseball bat from behind when she switched on the lights on the kitchen, ABC 13 Houston quotes the affidavit as saying. Police said that Saucedo joined his friend in violently striking Mary Dempsey in the living room.
After beating her, one of the boys slit her throat, and then Saucedo bound her and covered her corpse with a blanket while her son searched through her wallet, according to the documents.
Dempsey and Saucedo put the items they stole from the house into Mary Dempsey’s car; Saucedo later left in the vehicle, and the two at one point used her ATM card to withdraw cash, the Express-News reports.
Mary Dempsey’s body was eventually discovered by her daughter, Jessica Dempsey, who told San Antonio police that one of her mother’s coworkers informed her that Mary didn’t show up for work and wasn’t answering her phone, KSAT reports. Jessica then went to go check on her mother.
As she arrived, Jessica noticed both doors were unlocked and her mom’s car was missing, according to KSAT. She then discovered her mother’s body lying in a pool of blood under the blanket in the living room.
The SAPD reported Tuesday that they located the victim's car, and that Matthew Dempsey and his girlfriend were brought in for questioning, according to KSAT.
Dempsey allegedly confessed to the murder during the interview, the outlet reports. Saucedo was arrested the following day, police said in a Wednesday statement.
Both Dempsey and Saucedo have been booked into the Bexar County Jail, according to online jail records. They’re being held on $1 million bail each, the Express-News reports.
Neither suspect has been assigned an attorney who could speak on their behalf, according to the Associated Press.
