Brave 9-Year-Old Who Witnessed Mom's Murder Helps Police Find Her Alleged Killer
“The 9-year-old made it clear that he wanted the man who killed his mother caught," according to the Clayton County Sheriff's Office after the arrest of Darius Deandre Evans.
A brave 9-year-old boy from Lake City, Georgia who witnessed his mother’s murder helped police identify and arrest her alleged killer.
The victim was shot multiple times by her boyfriend inside an apartment on Saturday night, according to the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office. The shooting was preceded by an argument and after the the suspect left the apartment, he returned to shoot the victim again, according to police. The victim was pronounced dead upon arrival to a hospital. She has been identified as 27-year-old Iyonna Hodo, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Her son witnessed the shooting and identified the alleged shooter as Darius Deandre Evans, according to police.
“The 9-year-old made it clear that he wanted the man who killed his mother caught and was even brave enough to ride with the Sheriff to show him where he thought Evans may have fled,” police said in a statement, adding that Sheriff Victor Hill called in his “elite Fugitive Squad.” A six-hour manhunt ensued until Evan’s capture Sunday in the town of Lovejoy, about 24 miles from Lake City, where the shooting took place. Evans was arrested at his ex-girlfriend’s house, according to WSB-TV in Atlanta.
Police noted that they plan to ask the courts for the maximum penalties for Evans. He has been charged with malice murder, according to WSB-TV. He’s being held without bail.
A neighbor in the apartment complex where the shooting took place told WSB-TV that she heard often fighting from the apartment. She said that Hodo’s son ran to her home after his mother was shot to seek out help.
