Man Allegedly Beat 7-Week-Old Baby To Death 'Out Of Frustration' While Changing Her Diaper
Artem Eydelman changed his story to Pinellas County sheriff's deputies several times about how baby Gwendolyn died, authorities say.
A Florida man is accused of punching a 7-week-old girl in the head so hard while changing her diaper that he killed her.
Artem Eydelman, 29, was watching baby Gwendolyn Eydelman on Nov. 17 while the child’s mother, Mariah Samon, was at work. Eydelman isn't the child's biological father but started dating Samon, 26, while she was pregnant and signed the girl's birth certificate
Initially, Eydelman told police he fed Gwendolyn and laid her down in her bassinet before falling asleep in his bed. He claimed that just 15 minutes later he found Gwendolyn unresponsive and not breathing, according to a police report from the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office.
Eydelman said he alerted a family member, who called 911.
However, doctors told police that Gwendolyn had suffered a severe skull fracture consistent with high force impact. She also suffered bleeding on the brain, and numerous rib fractures that are typically consistent with compression trauma.
Gwendolyn died two days later when doctors removed her from life support.
Eydelman changed his story about what happened to the 7-week-old several times during the investigation, police say.
“Through various investigative techniques, detectives learned that Eydelman struck Gwendolyn in the head and squeezed the child’s midsection prior to the child losing consciousness,” police wrote.
Days after the child’s death, on Nov. 26, Eydelman admitted to detectives that “he struck Gwendolyn in the head with a closed fist out of frustration while changing her diaper,” police wrote. Eydelman also allegedly admitted to shaking the child and squeezing the child’s midsection before anyone called 911.
Eydelman has been charged with one count of first-degree murder.
