Aaron Hernandez’ Suicide Notes Revealed: ‘Never Fear Me’
"I KNEW I LOVED YOU = SAVAGE GARDEN"
The three suicide notes penned by Aaron Hernandez have been published in New York Post story over the weekend.
The former Patriots tight end committed suicide behind bars in April 2017. He was found hanging in his cell at the Souza Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley, Massachusetts, according to the Boston Globe. Just one week before his suicide, Hernandez was acquitted for a 2012 double murder, but was already serving a life sentence for a separate murder in 2013.
Hernandez’ lawyer Jose Baez wrote a book about the last year of his client’s life, “Unnecessary Roughness: Inside the Trial and Final Days of Aaron Hernandez,” set to hit bookstores Tuesday. Baez, who also served as Casey Anthony’s attorney, spoke to the Post about the missives.
“[Hernandez] wrote three letters the night he died, letters discovered in his cell and released to us by corrections officials a few days after his death,” Baez said, adding that he doesn’t think that his client was in “sound mind” while writing the notes.
“He had a serious brain disease. We need more awareness of it, or we’re going to see more suicides.”
Hernandez's family is suing the National Football League after finding out the late athlete had severe signs of chronic traumatic encephalopathy . According to ESPN, the former football star's lawyer said the family is suing the NFL and the New England Patriots for making him believe the sport was safe.
Researchers who spotted signs of CTE in the late 27-year-old's brain determined it was “the most severe case they had ever seen in someone of Aaron’s age,” Baez said in a previous news conference, adding that Hernandez's brain shows a level of damage more in line with players with a median age of 67 years.
