Manner Of Death For Woman Found Dead At A Fire Station Miles Away From Her Burned Out Car Remains ‘Undetermined’

A coroner has ruled 21-year-old Florida college student Sheridan Wahl’s manner of death “undetermined” two months after her body was found at a rural South Carolina fire station, miles from her burned out car.

Florence County Coroner Keith von Lutcken said Wahl died from “multiple blunt force injuries due to a fall,” after her body was found Sept. 21 at the base of a the Hannah-Salem Friendfield Fire Department’s training tower, Fox News reports.

The manner of death has been ruled “undetermined” after von Lutcken said he was unable to account for her final movements.

Von Lutcken believes Wahl had been dead about 18 hours before her body was discovered—but that leaves a significant gap in the timeline of her last known activities.

Wahl last spoke to her mother on Sept. 19 around 1 p.m., when she called her on FaceTime from the 300 block of Ocean Boulevard in Myrtle Beach to say that she had been unable to rent a moped because she was not wearing shoes, according to a police report obtained by the media outlet.

Wahl had been in the area to visit her father, but told her mother she wanted to return to Florida.

Less than two hours later, around 2:23 p.m., her red Toyota Corolla was found burned in a ditch in Scranton, South Carolina—an area about 50 miles from away Myrtle Beach.

The vehicle was missing a license plate and its vehicle identification number was not legible, according to a police report obtained previously by Oxygen.com.

Von Lutcken said investigators later spoke with a man who told them he'd picked the 21-year-old up along Highway 378 after her vehicle crashed and dropped her off at the fire station because she was exhibiting “erratic” behavior, local station WBTW reports.

Von Lutcken said investigators have spoken with the man about his alleged encounter, but declined to provide any further details.

It’s unclear what time he said he gave her the ride.

Wahl’s body was found Sept. 21. The coroner believes the 21-year-old died about 18 hours earlier, leaving about a 24-hour window during which her whereabouts are unaccounted for.

He told local station WMBF that the “amount of time that is unaccounted for,” along with the fact that investigators do not know if Wahl was with someone at the time she died, led to him to classify the death as undetermined.

“I can’t say definitively someone didn’t push or throw her off,” he said. “Likewise, I can’t say she didn’t fall or jump on her own. Therefore, the only options for manner of death is homicide, suicide or accident and we don’t know. That’s why I ruled it as undetermined.”

He added that a toxicology report revealed nothing concerning in her bloodstream at the time of her death.

Ryan Alphin, the new interim spokesman for the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), who has now taken over the case, declined to comment on the autopsy results to Fox News.

Alphin said the investigation into the death remains ongoing.
