What happened to Mexican journalist Regina Martínez?
That's the question at the heart of Oxygen Book Club's November 2022 pick "In the Mouth of the Wolf: A Murder, a Cover-Up, and the True Cost of Silencing the Press" by former AP Mexico bureau chief Katherine Corcoran. The book explores Corcoran's investigation into Martínez's shocking murder, asking both what happened to this brave journalist and "how silencing the free press threatens basic protections and rule of law across the globe," per the book's synopsis.
Martínez worked in the state of Veracruz for a magazine called Proseco, writing stories that aimed to expose rot and corruption in Mexican politics. Her work often got her in hot water — until 2012, when, after another explosive story about Veracruz politicians, she was beaten to death in her bathroom.
"In the Mouth of the Wolf: A Murder, a Cover-Up, and the True Cost of Silencing the Press" follows Corcoran's trip to Veracruz investigate the circumstances around Martínez's murder and uncover the truth of who killed such an influential journalist and why. Bonding with several of Martínez's friends, Corcoran's journey leads to some disturbing answers.
Not just a murder investigation, this thoughtful and gripping nonfiction read is also a look into Mexican politics that examines the wider impact violence against reporters has on a community.
