Massachusetts Woman Living In Netherlands Allegedly Killed By Jealous Tinder Date Who Had Been Stalking Her
“She just had so much more to give and she had a lot of love for everyone,” victim Mieke Oort’s sister said of the Sunday stabbing.
A Massachusetts woman who was attending college in the Netherlands was allegedly stabbed to death Sunday by a jealous Tinder date who had been stalking her for weeks.
Mieke Oort, 21, was attacked early Sunday morning in her apartment in Leeuwarden, according to a statement from Dutch police.
Officers responded to the home around 3:36 a.m. Sunday after receiving a report of a house fire.
After extinguishing the small fire, they found Oort dead inside and two men, a 25-year-old victim and 30-year-old victim, injured.
“She was my baby sister. We don’t really know how to cope with it,” Oort’s sister, Danique Oort told Boston news outlet WCVB. “She had just so much more to give and she had a lot of love for everyone.”
Authorities arrested a 27-year-old man, identified only as Thomas R., near the German town of Leer that morning around 5 a.m., according to Dutch publication Boevennieuws.
Oort’s ex-boyfriend Michael told the Dutch news outlet that Oort had met the suspect through Tinder. However, when Michael and Oort were considering getting back together, he said Thomas R. got jealous and began to stalk Oort, driving up and down her street and harassing her on WhatsApp.
According to her sister, the suspect had even placed a tracker on Oort’s bicycle.
"He put a tracker on her bike because in the Netherlands, you bike everywhere," Danique said.
Sources told Boeveniews that on the morning of the killing, Thomas R. allegedly threw an incendiary device into the building, where Oort had lived in an apartment above a shop, to ensure the people inside would come out. Two male residents of the building were injured after a fight broke out during the melee.
Oort was found stabbed to death.
Ooart grew up in Winchester, Massachusetts and had graduated from high school there in 2019 before she moved to the Netherlands to become a student at NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences.
The family was connected to the country through Oort’s father, who is Dutch and still had family there.
"Right now, we're just trying to process this whole situation and really say our goodbyes, and make the necessary arrangements that we'll have to do,” Danique said.
She described her sister to WCVB as the “sweetest, strongest woman I knew.”
“She just really put everyone else before her. Everyone,” she said.
Oort’s family is now traveling to the Netherlands to gather more information about the tragedy, MassLive reports.
