Florida Man Allegedly Claims 'Voodoo' Compelled Him To Rape 13-Year-Old Relative
West Palm Beach police charged Jean Innocent, 41, with sexual battery with a child, incest and impregnation of a child after he allegedly admitted to raping his victim.
A 41-year-old South Florida man allegedly told investigators he believed "Voodoo" compelled him to rape his 13-year-old relative after the minor's hospital visit led police to accuse him of impregnating her.
Jean Innocent was taken into custody on Dec. 19 and charged with two counts of sexual battery with a child, one count of incest and another of impregnation of a child, according to a probable cause affidavit obtained by Oxygen.com from the West Palm Beach Police Department.
The minor — whose name and relation to Innocent were redacted from the report to shield her identity — was brought to St. Mary's Hospital in West Palm Beach after complaining of abdominal pain that day. A pregnancy test revealed that she was roughly six weeks pregnant, according to the affidavit.
West Palm Beach Detective Brittany Tatum wrote in the document that the victim told investigators Innocent had sexually assaulted her "approximately four times since she had abdominal surgery in July 2020."
The first instance took place in the summer of 2022, she told investigators. The next transpired in November.
Tatum wrote that Innocent came into the girl's room, pulled down her pants, told her "give me 10 minutes," got on top of her and began raping her. Allegedly, the girl recalled, he stopped and said "never mind" after the girl said "no" and cried. The encounter, she said, hurt and made her "feel weird," the document states.
During a controlled call recorded by investigators, according to the affidavit, the victim told Innocent that she had been vomiting and that the hospital was going to give her a pregnancy test.
Innocent told her that she couldn't be pregnant because her period wasn't due for another week, and "told her to say no," according to the affidavit. He then "began making up a story to tell about a relationship with a boy named 'Semen,'" and told the victim "if she tells he will go to jail."
The victim asked Innocent, "did you do it inside of me?" according to the affidavit. Innocent allegedly replied, "Yes, I think I do it."
After the damning phone call, West Palm Beach police took Innocent into custody, where he allegedly told investigators that he "believed Voodoo caused him to have sexual intercourse with [the victim]."
Voodoo is an occult religion primarily practiced in the Caribbean and in the southern United States that combines elements of Roman Catholicism with traditional West African magical and religious rites and characterized by sorcery and spirit possession.
Innocent is currently being held in the Palm Beach County Detention Center without bail. The West Palm Beach Police Department did not respond to Oxygen.com's request for comment.
