Pregnant Ex-Radio DJ Killed In Her Florida Apartment, Boyfriend Taken Into Custody
Friends say Tasheka Young had been "blinded by love" and failed to heed their warnings to get out of the allegedly abusive relationship.
A pregnant former local radio personality was found dead in her Florida apartment Saturday afternoon.
Friends and family have identified the victim to WTLV-WJXX as 34-year-old Tasheka Young, a popular former radio DJ turned teacher, who had been expecting her third child when she was killed Saturday in her Jacksonville home.
They identified the suspect, 33-year-old Bursey Jerome Armstrong, as her long-time boyfriend and father of her children.
Deputies with the Jacksonville County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement that they discovered an adult female victim “unresponsive” Saturday in a home in the 12400 block of Biscayne Boulevard after a call came in to dispatch.
Armstrong was identified as the suspect “through the course of the investigation.”
Authorities have released few other details; however, a heavily redacted arrest report obtained by Oxygen.com indicates investigators believe the incident occurred around 5:20 p.m. Saturday and a “semiautomatic" handgun had been involved.
Phylisha Thompson, a close friend of Young’s, told WTLV-WJXX that Young had been the victim of domestic violence throughout her turbulent relationship with Armstrong.
“It’s not surprising, but it’s surprising,” she said. “Because we kept telling her to leave. We knew it was coming, but when it came, it just really hurt because it was so real. So many of us knew what was going on, tried to save her, and she loves so hard, so deep that it just no word can penetrate that.”
Keturah Jordan added that she believed her friend had been “blinded by love” and didn’t want to see the danger.
Young became a well-known name in the Jacksonville community while working as an on-air personality for Power 106.1, a hip-hop radio station where she was known as “Tysheeks.”
The station remembered its former coworker in a tribute on social media.
“Our hearts are broken this morning,” the station wrote. “Tasheka Young, ‘Tysheeks,’ was a spirited, ambitious and loved part of the Power 106.1 family for many years. She loved her job, her community, and most of all her family. Her voice will never be forgotten and we pray for her and her family.”
Sequoyah Green told WJXT about meeting Young while both worked at the radio station, describing her as someone who had been like a “big sister” to her.
“Takesha, she truly changed my life. She has a way of drawing those things out of you, you may not know is in you. She was a cheerleader for me,” she said, adding that Young had taught her all the essentials of radio.
Young, who had both a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Bethune Cookman University, left the business to become a teacher and spend more time with her family. Friends say she was the mother of two children and had been expecting her third child when she was killed.
Armstrong, who is being held at a pre-trial detention facility, was denied bond in the case after a judge determined there was substantial probable cause, according to the outlet.
