Ex-California Teacher Avoids Jail Time For Unlawful Sexual Contact With Underage Student

A former California music teacher won’t spend time behind bars for the sexual assault of a 17-year-old student.

Amanda Hubble pleaded no contest last month to felony charges of unlawful sexual intercourse and oral copulation of a person under 18. On Wednesday, Fresno County Superior Court Judge Jonathan Skiles sentenced the former teacher to two years probation, according to the Fresno Bee. She must also register a sex offender in California for the next 10 years. 

Hubble had previously pleaded not guilty to four felony sex charges. She'd faced a maximum punishment of three years and eight months in prison.

Prior to her sentencing, her 17-year-old victim's family had demanded the judge impose the stiffest possible sentence against disgraced educator.

"We feel that words alone cannot put into context the detrimental effects this woman's decisions have had on ourselves, the siblings, the school district, our community, her own son and family, but most importantly, the victim himself," the teen's mother wrote in a victim impact statement that was read in court by prosecutors last week, according to the Fresno Bee.

"The physical and psychological effects by themselves are distressing, sadly apparent, and we fear long-lasting."

She added that the former honors student began failing classes and lost his job after the assaults, lost weight and had to begin taking anti-depressant medications.

According to the case’s warrant, Hubble had at least two unlawful sexual encounters with the teenager dating back to late 2021, Fresno television station KFSN-TV reported. The first occurred in her car in November 2021 and the second unfolded days before Hubble’s arrest at her home the following month. 

The 17-year-old victim — who became locked out of his family’s house after returning home late from one of the suspected trysts with Hubble — was first questioned about the assaults by his father. The teen also later disclosed the abusive sexual relationship with Hubble to a high school peer. Investigators say Hubble herself also told another student about what she had done, per KFSN-TV.

Investigators later obtained romantic text and Snapchat messages exchanged by Hubble and the teen student as well. 

Hubble's attorney, W. Kent Hamlin, was adamant that the former teacher had taken responsibility for her actions.

"It’s not unusual for a family member to request the maximum punishment," W. Kent Hamlin, Hubble's attorney, told Oxygen.com on Monday afternoon. "In this case, the judge considered Ms. Hubble’s lack of prior criminal history and her acceptance of responsibility in determining that a sentence of probation was appropriate."

Hubble had previously worked as an elementary and high school choral teacher in the Clovis Unified School District since 2016, according to a school district spokesperson. She was placed on unpaid leave following her arrest late last year, and her teaching license was revoked.

“We have pursued every action available to us, including reporting Ms. Hubble’s actions to the California Teacher Credentialing Commission and working closely with police investigating the charges, to ensure she faces consequences for her unacceptable behavior,” the Clovis Unified School District told Oxygen.com in a statement on Monday.

Hubble is no longer employed by the school district, the spokesperson added.

At her sentencing, Hubble’s legal counsel stated she’d been working at a new job for the past five months.
