Alex Murdaugh's attorneys have alleged in a new court filing that investigators turned a “blind eye” to evidence that suggested Curtis Smith could have been involved in the shooting deaths of Maggie and Paul Murdaugh.
Attorneys sparred at a Monday hearing to determine whether a protection order should be issued against the defense as part of the discovery process leading up to Alex Murdaugh's murder trial.
Alex Murdaugh faces nine additional charges — four counts of obtaining property under false pretenses, three counts of money laundering and two counts of computer crimes – adding to his already considerable legal problems.
Prosecutors responded to the accusations in a motion of their own, accused Alex Murdaugh's defense of a “blatant attempt to create drama when formerly there was none.”
Alex Murdaugh’s defense attorney Dick Harpootlian agreed to no bond in the case and said his client, who continues to maintain his innocence, is hoping for a speedy trial to clear his name.
“Alex [Murdaugh] wants his family, friends and everyone to know that he did not have anything to do with the murders of Maggie and Paul,” his attorneys said in a statement to Oxygen.com. “He loved them more than anything in the world.”
Disgraced South Carolina legal scion Alex Murdaugh is expected to face charges in the shooting June 2021 shooting deaths of Maggie and Paul Murdaugh, according to NBC News.
Alex Murdaugh has been accused of conspiring with his friend and former legal client Curtis Edward Smith to run a years-long money laundering scheme and pain killer ring.
A spokesperson for the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) confirmed to Oxygen.com that Curtis “Eddie” Smith had been arrested, but declined to provide any additional details about the allegations against him.
