Alex Murdaugh Reportedly To Be Indicted For Wife And Son’s Murders
Disgraced South Carolina legal scion Alex Murdaugh is expected to face charges in the shooting June 2021 shooting deaths of Maggie and Paul Murdaugh, according to NBC News.
The saga surrounding the Murdaugh family of South Carolina continues to unfold, with multiple sources saying Alex Murdaugh is expected to be indicted by a grand jury on murder charges related to the 2021 shooting deaths of his wife and son, according to NBC News.
Murdaugh was the one to alert authorities to the bodies of his wife and son on June 7, 2021. Maggie Murdaugh, 52, and Paul Murdaugh, 22, were found shot to the death on the grounds of the one of the Murdaughs’ South Carolina properties, an investigation that sparked a number of allegations against the affluent family who had built a legal dynasty in the state.
But now, a grand jury is poised to indict Alex Murdaugh for the murders of his wife and son, three sources close to the investigation told NBC News on Tuesday. That indictment is expected to be announced later this week.
Officials with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) reportedly met with the Murdaugh family Tuesday morning. Alex Murdaugh’s brother, John Marvin Murdaugh, told the Post and Courier that officials delivered the news about the upcoming indictment.
“The entire family has been consistent that regardless of what goes on, we want the truth,” John Murdaugh said Tuesday morning.
One of Alex Murdaugh's attorneys, Dick Harpootlian, told local outlet The State that he had yet to hear "official word about anything," regarding the reported indictments.
In the wake of his wife and son's deaths, Murdaugh, an attorney who worked for the law firm his family ran for generations, faced a mounting series of legal problems. He's been accused of swindling colleagues and clients out of millions, as well as his alleged admissions of drug use and embezzlement, according to the Post and Courier. His law license was suspended indefinitely last fall and he faces potential disbarment by the South Carolina Supreme Court.
Even before the murders, the family was under scrutiny. Paul had been facing felony charges stemming from a 2019 boat crash that ended in the death of 19-year-old Mallory Beach, in which he was allegedly operating the boat under the influence. Paul was murdered before he could see the inside of a courtroom to face charges.
The case only grew stranger when Alex Murdaugh allegedly attempted to take his own life over Labor Day weekend in 2021. Authorities say he enlisted the help of an associate, Curtis Smith, to help Murdaugh shoot himself in the head in a botched suicide-for-hire, and an alleged attempt to cash in on a $10 million policy that would have gone to his surviving son, Buster.
Murdaugh surrendered to authorities in September and was charged with insurance fraud, conspiracy to commit insurance fraud, and filing a false police report.
He remains at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center in Columbia.
