Man Allegedly Opens Fire After Finding Out Ice Cube Concert Was Sold Out
Daniel Elizarrara, the suspect, was shot by deputies and is currently hospitalized, authorities say.
A disgruntled would-be concertgoer opened fire at a California horse racing track on Sunday after learning that an Ice Cube performance scheduled for later that evening was sold out, according to police.
Daniel Elizarrara, 22, initially approached the ticket counter at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club at around 6:40 p.m. that night in hopes of purchasing a ticket to see rap icon Ice Cube perform, according to a press release from the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department. Trouble erupted after Elizarrara was told that the concert was sold out; according to the release, an argument ensued, and Elizarrara pulled out a semi-automatic handgun and fired several shots. Deputies on the scene then returned fire, striking Elizarrara, who was later transported to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla for his injuries. He is currently stable and expected to survive, according to the Sheriff’s Department. No one else was injured, and the concert reportedly went on as planned.
The shooting is currently under investigation by the Homicide Unit of the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, according to the release.
In footage of a race that was going on during the shooting, an announcer can be heard saying, “There’s gunfire at the track.” Video obtained and published by TMZ shows a man firing two shots into the air, which are then met by four more rounds, presumably fired by one or more of the deputies on scene. More graphic footage published by the outlet shows an unidentified officer firing four shots at Elizarrara, at which point the 22-year-old gunman slumps to the ground.
Ice Cube responded to a fan’s tweet about the shooting on Monday, writing, “I feel bad for the people who left the show, but I totally understand.”
“Moral of the story: Come see ya homie Cube...but leave the strap at home,” he added.
