50 Cent Named In Revenge Porn Lawsuit From ‘Love & Hip Hop’ Star Teairra Mari
Mari says the tape was originally leaked by her ex-boyfriend, Akbar Abdul-Ahad. She will be taking legal action against both men.
Reality TV star Teairra Mari, 30, is taking legal action against ex-boyfriend Akbar Abdul-Ahad and rapper 50 Cent after the two allegedly shared revenge porn featuring her.
The “Love & Hip Hop: Hollywood” cast member announced the news during a press conference on May 17, ABC 7 reports. Accompanied by attorneys Lisa Bloom and Walter Mosley, Mari stated that after she she broke up with Abdul-Ahad on May 8 after finding out he had cheated on her, the New York Daily News reports. Following the split, Abdul-Ahad logged into her Instagram account and posted a “sex tape and an obscene photo” of her online on May 9, “clearly to humiliate” her, Mari said. She quickly removed the content, but 50 Cent, who she says is a “good friend” of Abdul-Ahad’s, had already shared one of the images with his 18 million Instagram followers, alongside the caption, “get the strap.” After Instagram removed the image, 50 Cent, whose birth name is Curtis Jackson, made another post complaining about censorship on Instagram.
“50 Cent has 18 million followers, so I was devastated,” Mari said. “To make it even worse, even after Instagram took the picture down, he had no remorse, no regard, and he posted another photo and complained that IG was censoring him.”
Abdul-Ahad denied posting the inappropriate content in a phone interview with the Daily News, during which he reportedly commented, “I’m not the one who did it. Our phones were compromised, both of ours, through the iCloud.”
Abdul-Ahad said that he and Mari were still romantically involved when the material was leaked, commenting, “We were still dating. I don’t have revenge on a woman who’s still my woman. Why would I do that? That doesn’t make sense. It doesn’t help me, it doesn't help my relationship. I wouldn’t do that to any woman.”
Mari explained that her motivations for taking action go beyond just her own interests.
“I stand here in the pursuit of justice, not just for myself but for any other woman who has been exploited by a man, who has felt the pain of having her most intimate moments unjustly and illegally exposed to the public,” she said.
Bloom, who represented reality TV star Blac Chyna in her revenge porn lawsuit against Rob Kardashian, announced her plans to file a police report as well as a lawsuit against both Abdul-Ahad and 50 Cent later that day. They will be seeking a “significant punitive damages award.” Bloom commented specifically on 50 Cent’s actions during the press conference, People reports, remarking, “Apparently, 50 Cent’s misogyny and ego is so inflated that he still needs to be schooled that the law applies to him, just like everyone else.”
The lawsuit will cite distribution of private materials, intrusion into private affairs, disclosure of private facts, and intentional infliction of emotional distress, the Daily News reports.
After Bloom announced on Twitter on May 16 that she was representing Mari, 50 Cent posted a photo of himself laughing with Bloom’s mother, famed attorney Gloria Allred.
“Oh Lisa stop,” he wrote in the caption. “Don’t make me tell your mom.”
“Needless to say, my mom does not think revenge porn is funny,” Bloom said in response on Thursday, according to the Daily News.
He later referenced being “pulled into a reality show’s story line” in another post.
This is not the first time 50 Cent has gotten into legal trouble involving revenge porn. His feud with fellow rapper Rick Ross culminated in 50 Cent adding commentary to a sex tape of Lastonia Leviston, a woman with whom Ross shares a child, and posting it online in 2015. A judge later ruled against 50 Cent in the revenge porn case, the New York Daily News reports, and ordered him to pay Leviston $7 million.
