Peacock's 'Sex, Lies And The College Cult' Explores The Dark World Of Larry Ray
The upcoming Peacock documentary "Sex, Lies and The College Cult," will delve into how Lawrence Ray was able to move into his daughter's college dorm, gain psychological control of her friends and form a sex cult.
“The truth is unimaginable.”
Those ominous words in the new teaser for Peacock’s documentary “Sex, Lies and The College Cult” describe the sensational case of Larry Ray, a convicted felon who moved into his daughter’s college dorm room, brainwashed her friends and started a sex cult. (Watch the teaser above.)
“Who is Larry Ray? Nobody really knows,” former NYPD Commissioner Bernie Kerik, who Ray once bragged was a close personal friend, says at the beginning of the teaser.
Ray was convicted earlier this year of 15 federal counts including, extortion, sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy in the bizarre years-long plot to gain psychological, emotional and financial control of his daughter’s friends, even forcing one into prostitution.
“It was about using sex as sort of tool to de-stabilize them and make them uncomfortable,” another source said in the trailer, later describing the shocking allegations as “the craziest story I’ve ever heard.”
The new documentary will explore how Ray became a fixture in the student’s lives and slowly used his stories of rubbing elbows with some of the country’s most elite to gain the admiration and trust of his victims.
An FBI investigation into the shocking allegations was launched after New York Magazine published “The Stolen Kids of Sarah Lawrence” in 2019, detailing the disturbing story.
The investigation concluded that Ray used physical, verbal and psychological abuse to isolate the students from their parents and gain control of their lives, even dictating what they ate or when they slept.
The students were forced to perform degrading acts captured on film or forced to falsely confess on video in relentless interrogation sessions to supposed grievances or property damage against Ray, who later used the videos to extort them for money, according to The New York Times.
In one instance he threatened to dismember a student while holding a knife and forced another woman into prostitution for years, stealing an estimated $1.7 million from her, according to New York Magazine.
“He exploited them. He terrorized them. He tortured them,” U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said after the guilty verdict was handed down. “Let me be very clear. Larry Ray is a predator. An evil man who did evil things.”
The upcoming documentary, slated to premiere Sept. 28 on Peacock, will tell the dramatic tale of deception, betrayal, extortion, torture and sex trafficking.
“Follow the shocking and unnerving story of Larry Ray and how he brainwashed students of Sarah Lawrence College into an abusive sex cult that upended their lives, and the lives of their families,” a description from Peacock reads.
Ray, who is now facing up to life in prison, is scheduled to be sentenced for his crimes later this month, according to The New York Times.
