'American Greed' Will Focus On Theranos' Elizabeth Holmes For Its 200th Episode
CNBC's "American Greed" premieres with a look at Rep. Matt Gaetz's former associate Joel Greenberg and then tackles alleged fraudster Elizabeth Holmes for its 200th episode.
“American Greed” is coming back in 2022 with more riveting real-life tales of people who would do anything for money.
The CNBC original series will kick off its 15th season on Jan. 5 with an episode on Joel Greenberg, “a privileged millennial from a rich Florida family” turned criminal, according to an “American Greed” press release. The former Florida tax collector, an infamous associate of Florida Republican Congressman Matt Gaetz, pleaded guilty to sex trafficking, wire fraud, identity theft, stalking and conspiracy in May.
The episode about his crimes, entitled “The Life & Crimes of Joel Greenberg,” refers to his case as one that was “bigger and stranger than anyone had imagined.”
The show’s 200th episode will air on Jan. 12, and will be devoted to Elizabeth Holmes, the former CEO of Theranos who is currently on trial for fraud. Holmes was indicted in 2018 for allegedly defrauding numerous investors by making false claims about the breakthrough medical technology her company had supposedly developed — a blood testing device that could perform dozens of tests using minuscule amounts of blood. Holmes has pleaded not guilty and faces up to 20 years behind bars if convicted.
“American Greed” refers to her case as “one of the most infamous alleged corporate fraud cases of the 21st century.”
This season will also take a glimpse into the rise and near-collapse of WeWork in an episode called “How WeWork Went Wild,” as well as air an episode on suburban Eagle Scout turned Dark Web drug lord, Aaron Shamo.
“There is a deep fascination with how far people will go in pursuit of money and ‘American Greed’ sets the standard in storytelling,” said Denise Contis, the executive vice president and head of content for CNBC Primetime, stated. “With the 200th episode approaching, we are serving up bigger and bolder cases of corruption, excess and greed to our loyal and engaged fan base.”
The first episode of Season 15 will kick off on Jan. 5 at 10PM ET/PT.
