The ‘Fred And Rosemary West Of Germany’ Sentenced For Torture And Murders In Their ‘House Of Horrors’
Wilfried and Angelika Wagener, who were suspected of killing two women and torturing at least eight, were found guilty, more than two years after they were caught.
A couple known as the “Fred and Rosemary West of Germany” were sentenced on Friday for luring multiple women to their home and torturing them, in some cases, to death.
Wilfried Wagener, 48, and his former wife, Angelika Wagener, 49, are suspected of using romantic classified ads in the newspaper to lure at least eight women to what’s been called their “house of horrors” and extensively torture them—two fatally so.
Wilfried was sentenced to 11 years in a psychiatric ward on Friday, while Angelika was handed 13 years behind bars, The Independent, a UK-based daily newspaper, reports.
The deadly couple, now divorced, reportedly heaped a myriad of abuses upon the women they captured and kept in their home (pictured above) in the town of Höxter-Bosseborn, located in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.
They would routinely beat and strangle their victims, in addition to burning them with hot water, according to The Independent.
They would also tear out the women’s hair, and torture them using pepper spray and electric shocks, the outlet reports.
The pair have regularly been compared to English serial killers Fred and Rose West, who were known for murdering lodgers — and also sadistically torturing them first most of the time — and then burying their victims’ remains on the grounds of their Gloucester home beginning in the late 1960s.
The Wageners carried on with their cold-blooded acts over the course of several years, according to Fox News, in what prosecutors called an attempt to find slaves for Wilfried.
The couple arrested in 2016 when their car broke down and they were forced to call for help, according to the outlet.
First responders noted the deteriorating condition of a woman who was with the couple; among the injuries that the woman, identified as Susanne F., endured, a doctor present in the ambulance noted that she had rotting flesh on the area around her tailbone, indicating that she had been slouched in the same position for multiple weeks, according to DW.com, a German English-language news site. She later died in the hospital
This eventually prompted an investigation by authorities into the possible abuse she suffered prior to her death, which uncovered the Wageners’ disturbing undertakings.
Prior to their arrest, the couple reportedly tortured a 33-year-old woman to death two years prior in 2014. They are said to have dismembered her corpse, stored her body parts in the freezer and later disposed of them in a fireplace, according to BBC News.
Angelika Wagener — who, according to DW, confessed when the trial kicked off in 2016 — once again admitted to their gruesome actions in court, The Independent reports. She apologized to her victims during Friday’s sentencing.
As for her ex-husband, he reportedly commented, “I didn’t know right from wrong,” according to The Independent, and added that therapy “wouldn’t be bad.”
