'Very Nice' And 'Quiet' Teacher Accused Of Performing Oral Sex On Student
Her lawyer: "You reach out to make yourself available to kids, and the next thing you know, a single accusation can destroy your career.”
A woman who teaches at the New School for Leadership and the Arts in the Bronx pleaded not guilty on Saturday to charges that she sexually abused one of her 14-year-old students.
A student tipped off the school’s principal after hearing that Dori Myers, 29, allegedly performed oral sex on the teen victim, according to the Associated Press. The accusations stem from an incident that allegedly took place in November, the New York Daily News reports.
Myers lives in Garnerville, located in upstate New York, along with her husband who works in law enforcement. She has been reassigned to a role in which she will have no contact with students, according to the Department of Education. A spokesperson for the Department of Education called the accusations “deeply troubling.”
Myers has taught at the New School for Leadership and the Arts in the Bronx for nearly four years.
She has been released without bail after pleading not guilty to a criminal sexual act and to the endangerment of the welfare of a child, according to the Associated Press.
Myers’ lawyer Andrew Stoll called her a “model educator.”
“My understanding is she’s a really outstanding teacher,” Stoll said. “It sounds like no good deed goes unpunished. You reach out to make yourself available to kids, and the next thing you know, a single accusation can destroy your career.”
Myers has no disciplinary history at the school and no criminal history or arrests.
A neighbor of Myers spoke anonymously to the New York Daily News, stating that they are shocked by the accusations.
“She's a very nice, great girl. Quiet.”
