Teen Admits To Making Up A Story That Three Black Men Kidnapped And Raped Her
Authorities say Breana Rachelle Harmon deserves felony charges because of the gravity of the harm she committed by lying.
A teen girl from North Texas has pleaded guilty to making up a story that three black men kidnapped and sexually assaulted her last year. Breana Rachelle Harmon, 19, was hit with multiple charges for her lies including three felonies the Herald Democrat reports.
Last year, Harmon was arrested after she admitted she fabricated the kidnapping story. At first, she was charged with a misdemeanor. However, Grayson County District Attorney Joe Brown said in a news release that the charges were upgraded after he realized the gravity of the harm that she had committed, the Herald Democrat reports.
“Ms. Harmon was originally arrested for the misdemeanor offense of false report to a police officer. However, the more we have looked at what happened in this case, and considered the harm it caused, and certainly could have caused, we believe what she did fits these higher charges. What she did was very serious, and we believe it was felony conduct,” the press release states, according to the Herald Democrat.
Last year, a pants-less, bloody Harmon ran into a church claiming that three black men in ski masks kidnapped her, according to the Dallas Morning News. At the time she said that two men raped her as the third held her down. She also claimed she was attacked with a knife. Just two weeks later, though, she admitted that the cuts on her body were self-inflicted, according to Fox News.
She said she made up the story because she got into an argument with her boyfriend and didn’t want her mother to be mad at her.
"She's very remorseful for what she did and what she said, and that's why she decided to plead guilty," the teen’s attorney Bob Jarvis told the Herald Democrat.
