Man Allegedly Stabs 2 In Attempt To Steal $7.99 Chicken Caesar Salad, Then Laughs In Court
Judge: "You're not supposed to steal, and you're not supposed to stab people, over a salad or anything else.”
A Miami Beach, Florida man allegedly stabbed two grocery store employees in an attempt to steal a $7.99 chicken Caesar salad from a Publix. Matthew Miller, 43, was arrested on Wednesday night after the two employees who tried to stop him from shoplifting were treated for their injuries.
According to the Miami Herald, one victim had to be rushed to a hospital after being stabbed in the chest. That employee is expected to be okay. The other employee was stabbed in the knee and was treated on the scene.
“Search incident to arrest revealed that [Miller] had concealed a chicken Caesar salad in the bag that he was carrying,” Miller’s arrest affidavit states.
In addition to being charged with armed robbery with a deadly weapon, he was also charged with aggravated battery, retail theft and possession of drug paraphernalia. It is unclear if Miller has a lawyer who can speak on his behalf at this time.
Miller did laugh in court over the incident.
Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Mindy Glazer appeared stunned as she read over Miller's charges in court on Thursday.
"He stabbed somebody over a chicken Caesar salad," she read out loud.
Miller responded to that statement by bursting into laughter, WSVN-TV reports.
"It's not funny," Glazer responded. "You could have killed the victim."
Miller then went on to condemn the employees that tried to stop him from stealing.
"Publix has shrinkets for these kinds of things," he said. "You're not supposed to apprehend people."
The judge reprimanded him, telling him "You're not supposed to steal, and you're not supposed to stab people, over a salad or anything else.”
