Former Alabama college athletes Thomas “Landon” Grant and Jacob Frye, both 19, were charged with a felony after allegedly beating a duck with a baseball bat and leaving it to die last month.

On May 5, a group of student baseball players from Central Alabama Community College in Alexander City allegedly took a Muscovy duck from a pond on campus after attending a party, according to Fox News. Detective Robert Oliver, of the Alexander City Police, told AL.com that the duck was hit with a bat and put in a bag.

As the night went on, one of the students decided to “put it out of its misery” officials said, and continued to hit the duck with the bat.

A coach later found the duck in the woods, gravely wounded, and reported the incident to the authorities. The duck was euthanized after being taken to a veterinarian.

After launching an investigation, the police arrested Grant. He was booked at the Tallapoosa County Jail and later released after posting $5,000 bond, according to AL.com. Frye, who now lives in Georgia, turned himself in to the police last week. They are both charged with aggravated animal cruelty. According to police, the investigation is still ongoing, and more arrests may be on the way.

Grant has a court date set for late July, according to AL.com.
