Amanda Peet And Christian Slater To Star In Second Season Of 'Dirty John'
The second season of "Dirty John" will focus on another true crime story, the Betty Broderick case.
Amanda Peet and Christian Slater will star in the second season of “Dirty John” as the popular series explores another real-life crime that shocked a nation.
The second season of the series — which will move to the USA Network — will focus on the Betty Broderick Story, a true-life tale of a bitter divorce case that ends in murder, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The first season of the popular drama, which aired on Bravo, told the story of Debra Newell, a California interior designer who fell in love with conman John Meehan despite her family’s misgivings and found herself in an abusive and controlling relationship with deadly consequences.
"The first season of “Dirty John” was a story of twisted love and coercive control — and both these insidious elements are also present in and integral to the story of Betty Broderick, whom I have wanted to write about since I became a writer," series creator and showrunner Alexandra Cunningham told The Hollywood Reporter. "I can't wait to see Amanda and Christian bring it to life."
In the latest installment, viewers will see the marriage of Betty (Peet) and Dan (Slater) Broderick play out over several decades beginning in the 1960s as Betty endures years of sacrifice and suffering to help support Dan through medical school and law school. Dan eventually becomes a star in the San Diego legal community, making Betty’s earlier efforts all the more worthwhile, until Dan meets a bright and beautiful younger woman.
As Betty refuses to accept reality, her efforts to fight back destabilize her, while Dan’s cold confidence blinds him to the results of his actions — until it leads to a deadly encounter.
The new season, which is written by Cunningham, will be led by director Maggie Kiley. Kiley is slated to direct four episodes of the season and will also serve as the co-executive producer/director for the season, Deadline reports.
Other directors include Kat Chandler, Meera Menon, Shannon Kohli and Cunningham.
Peet has most recently been seen in Amazon’s “The Romanoffs” and IFC’s “Brockmire.” Slater has appeared on the popular USA Show “Mr. Robot” for the last three seasons. He will also appear for the show’s final and forth season.
"Dirty John’s" first season, which starred Connie Britton and Eric Bana, was the second-highest rated new cable scripted series among viewers ages 18 to 49 in 2018, according to Deadline. The series also finished in the top five in total viewers between 25 and 54.
