Iowa Teen Who Left Home In The Middle Of Snowstorm After Arguing With Parents Fell To His Death, Police Say
Corey Brown, 13, left his Marshalltown home late at night during severe weather and was found dead days later.
An Iowa boy who went missing after his parents took away his cell phone during an argument died after falling from a communications tower in what police are calling an “all-around tragedy.”
The autopsy of 13-year-old Corey Brown revealed the teen had suffered a significant head injury and died from blunt force trauma, Marshalltown Police said in statement. The results of the autopsy are considered preliminary until toxicology reports are completed, which likely won’t occur for six to eight weeks.
“The investigation reveals that Brown climbed over a secure fence to enter the tower site. Brown then climbed onto the communication tower and fell from an undetermined distance,” they said.
Brown’s body was discovered Sunday, five days after the teen had left his home following what Police Chief Michael Tupper referred to as a “disciplinary discussion” between Brown and his parents. His parents had taken the teen’s cell phone away during their talk.
“Nothing extraordinary happened at home that caused this to occur,” Tupper said, according to The Des Moines Register, calling speculation that some sort of big fight had erupted that night an “unfair” characterization.
He called the incident an “all-around tragedy” that has impacted the entire community, according to KCCI.
“It’s been hard for everybody,” he said. “Marshalltown is a very special community that is very supportive of their friends and neighbors.”
The area school district has brought in counselors to help students deal with the death.
“Everyone is trying to process this in the way that they think is healthy,” Matt Cretsinger, director of special services for the Marshalltown School District, told The Des Moines Register.
Brown’s family has asked that “everyone honor and respect their privacy,” police said, as the family continues to grieve.
The funeral has been scheduled for Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Henry’s Catholic Church.
