Arrest Made In Fatal Shooting Of Young Texas Mother Who Died While Protecting Her Baby
Chante Wilson, 20, shielded her 1-year-old son during the fatal shooting, police said. Tranisha Miller has been arrested in the case.
A Texas woman has been arrested for allegedly gunning down a 20-year-old mother, who died while holding her child earlier this month.
Tranisha Latavia Miller, 25, was jailed last week in the Aug. 8 slaying of Chante MahoganyWilson, according to the Houston Police Department. Miller turned herself in on Aug. 17.
Police allege Miller “ambushed” Wilson and opened fire as she walked from a corner store with her boyfriend at around 1:45 a.m. Upon arrival, police found Wilson suffering from several gunshot wounds to her upper torso. Wilson was rushed to a local hospital where she later died.
“The suspect had hidden between parked cars and, as Wilson walked by, the suspect jumped out and began shooting,” the Houston Police Department said in a statement.
Wilson had been carrying her 1-year-old child at the time of the incident, according to police, KTRK-TV reported. As shots rang out, Wilson turned her back to her attacker, shielding the baby from the gunfire. Her child wasn’t harmed in the incident.
The young mother’s boyfriend, Delvin Jones, disclosed to investigators that he’d been dating both women for several months, according to a criminal complaint obtained by Oyxgen.com. An exact motive in the killing hasn’t been released.
Jones told police he and Wilson had been walking when Miller emerged from the street between parked cars and raised a handgun in his direction. He said he felt a round “snap past his head” and observed Miller firing her pistol into Wilson’s back, per charging documents.
Miller allegedly later fled the area in a red Nissan Cube or a similar small four-door sedan, police said.
Jones’ grandmother, who told authorities that Miller had lived at her home with her and her grandson, alleged that Miller called and “repeatedly” confessed to the shooting on Aug. 8. The elderly woman, officials said, also corroborated additional police details pertaining to Wilson’s shooting that weren’t “known to the general public.” She also accused Miller of threatening her and her grandson.
Miller was charged with murder and aggravated assault on a family member in connection with the deadly shooting.
Wilson was a mother of three, including twin 2-year-old girls and a 1-year-old son, according to a GoFundMe campaign set up by her family to help cover the young mother’s funeral expenses. She would have turned 21 on Wednesday.
Miller is being held at a Harris County detention center on a $900,000 bond, according to online jail records. She’s scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 1. Oxygen.com has reached out to her appointed defense attorney, Jeanie L. Dicky for comment.
In 2017, Miller was arrested for trespassing and forcible entry, separate court filings show. The case was later dismissed.
