Ohio Man Attacks Cop With Pen After Arrest For Botched Kidnapping Of Kindergartener
Reid Duran allegedly admitted to impersonating a parent at Saint Brigid School “to find a small child to obtain sexual favors," according to charging documents. He also allegedly tried to stab a cop during his interrogation.
An Ohio man who allegedly attempted to kidnap a child from a kindergarten classroom last week later tried stabbing an investigator with a pen during his interrogation, video shows.
Reid Duran, 35, was charged with attempted kidnapping, felonious assault and escape in connection with the incident, according to online jail records obtained by Oxygen.com.
Duran was allegedly observed acting suspicious at an open house event at Saint Brigid School in Xenia, Ohio — a suburb of Dayton — on Aug. 22. The principal of the K-8 Catholic school called authorities to report a trespasser, telling emergency dispatchers that Duran was “posing a threat,” according to WHIO-TV.
“I have a gentleman here that has trespassed into our school open house, asking questions and claiming to be the parent of a daughter,” St. Brigid’s principal Terry Adkins told dispatchers on a 911 call. “And he is not. So I need a police officer to investigate and enquire. He’s posing a threat.”
Upon arrival, Duran was interviewed by law enforcement and he allegedly provided conflicting accounts of why he was at the school. Police say that he ultimately confessed to attempting to impersonate a parent for the purposes of abducting a child, according to WHIO-TV.
Duran also allegedly admitted to going to St. Brigid “to find a small child to obtain sexual favors,” per the case’s affidavit, the station reported. Police say the 35-year-old claimed he had plotted to incapacitate the child using a drug-laced Starburst candy.
Duran allegedly later tried to stab an officer in the neck, Dayton television station WDTN reported. Video of the incident, released by Xenia authorities, shows Duran pick up a pen and try to slash the investigator’s neck. Two cameras positioned at different angles captured the violent encounter.
According to Duran’s family, he suffers from schizophrenia, NBC News reported.
"That's not like him," his mother told the outlet. "I think he began to feel scared and he's cornered. I just know he's not in his right mind. He needs psychiatric help."
Duran appeared in Xenia Municipal Court on Monday, where a judge ordered he be held without bond.
“We have to prove by clear and convincing evidence that the weight of the evidence is great and the individual does represent a danger to the public,” David Hayes, Greene County Prosecutor said at Monday’s hearing. “And we believe that is the case with Mr. Duran.”
Duran was booked into a Greene County detention facility on Aug. 22, per online jail records. He’s also facing a separate criminal trespass charge, records show.
