U.S. Solider Charged In Murder Of Wife, A Former Signals Intelligence Analyst Who Was Found Dead In Army Barracks
Spc. Raul Hernandez Perez is accused of killing his wife, Selena Roth, at the military installation of Schofield Barracks in Honolulu.
An army intelligence analyst is accused of killing his wife, whose body was found at a Hawaii military base.
Army Spc. Raul Hernandez Perez was arrested and charged with the murder of his wife, Selena Roth, officials said. Her body was found inside a trash can at Schofield Barracks in Honolulu after her family requested a welfare check on Jan. 13, according to Hawaii News Now.
After Roth’s body turned up, Army officials announced they’d placed an unidentified soldier in pre-trial confinement. It’s unclear if that individual was Hernandez Perez.
"This is now an ongoing homicide investigation into a senseless and tragic death,” Chris Grey, a spokesman for Army CID, previously said in a news release. “Our agents will continue to work diligently in the pursuit of justice for the victim and her loved ones.”
No trial date has been set yet for the accused soldier, officials said.
Hernandez Perez, 25, was assigned to the 500th Military Intelligence Brigade.
“Our brigade and the Army community are heartbroken by Selena’s death,” Col. Theodore Travis, commander, 500th Military Intelligence Brigade, stated in a press release. “We have extended our condolences to Selena’s family, friends and loved ones.”
The Hawaii couple filed for divorce in October, according to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. Hernandez Perez had also previously sought a protective order against Roth after she allegedly destroyed a computer and deflated his car tires, court documents show.
Roth is also a former Army signals intelligence analyst. She received a medical discharge in March, Hernandez Perez previously indicated in court papers. Roth previously suggested on social media she’d been a victim of military sexual assault or harassment. Her Facebook avatar depicts murdered soldier Vanessa Guillén, whose mutilated remains were found about 20 miles from Fort Hood, Texas in June. U.S. Army Specialist Aaron Robinson, who authorities believe bludgeoned Guillén to death, killed himself July 1, shortly after Guillén's remains were discovered and identified, as authorities closed in on him.
Roth's family described the Hawaii mother as a “kindhearted” animal lover.
“That was [her] happy place in life,” her sister Aubrey told WINK. “Saving and rescuing animals right down to crocheted blankets for chickens.”
Roth’s brother added that she was the “type of girl who drove four hours after working to go rescue a dog from a kill shelter.”
“She had a big heart,” Michael Roth posted on Facebook.
She sister added that Roth leaves behind a 1-year-old baby girl.
“Her daughter was her world,” Aubrey said.
Roth’s family held a funeral for her last week, according to Hawaii News Now.
