Lawyers for Syed, whose conviction in 2000 for the killing of ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee was questioned in the hit podcast "Serial," say there are still legal avenues for them to explore.

Named after Henry Alford, the term refers to a "best interests plea" in which a defendant pleads guilty despite claiming innocence.

"I just knew the story we were hearing didn’t make any sense,” attorney Susan Simpson said of Adnan Syed's murder trial, chronicled in the new HBO docu-series "The Case Against Adnan Syed."

Maryland State Prosecutor Kevin Urick once called the Adnan Syed murder trial "pretty much a run-of-the-mill domestic violence murder." But his own work in the case suggests it's much more complex than that.

“Jay obviously picks and chooses what he tells, and at this point it’s created such a mess," Jenn Pusateri says in HBO's new docu-series The Case Against Adnan Syed."

“I do think he knows ways to manipulate the law,” Nikisha Horton says of ex-boyfriend Jay Wilds in "The Case Against Adnan Syed."

Jay Wilds and Adnan Syed may not have been close, but Wilds' witness testimony would ultimately be key to convicting Syed of Hae Min Lee's murder.

"I don’t know if it was something to read into or not but it wasn’t reciprocated back," she said about a hug she tried to give Adnan Syed after his girlfriend's body was found.

Adnan Syed might not be getting a new trial, but even the courts agree Cristina Gutierrez didn't give him effective legal counsel.
