Teen Allegedly Shoots Her Stepmother, Who Was 9 Months Pregnant, In The Head After Assaulting 11-Year-Old Stepbrother
Passion Latrice Watkins' stepbrother had run to a neighbor for help, but by the time authorities arrived, they found 36-year-old Melanie Powers dead.
A Georgia teenager is accused of fatally shooting her pregnant stepmother in the head after assaulting her young stepbrother.
Early Sunday, Passion Latrice Watkins, 19, allegedly attacked her 11-year-old stepbrother inside their Macon home, the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office stated in a press release. Watkins also allegedly assaulted the boy’s mother, 36-year-old Melanie Powers.
The boy “ran from the home to get help,” the sheriff's department stated.
“When deputies arrived on scene they found a female victim in bed suffering from a gunshot wound to the head,” the sheriff's department stated. The victim, later identified as Powers, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Powers was nine months pregnant, according to local outlet 13 WMAZ.
Soon after Powers' body was discovered, investigators tracked down Watkins who was sitting inside of a nearby park.
She has been charged with malice murder, aggravated assault, cruelty to children and feticide.
The 11-year-old boy was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. He was later released from the hospital into the care of family members.
Powers’ friend Tiffany Odom told 13 WMAZ that Watkins recently moved in with Powers. She said her friend was trying her best to juggle taking care of Watkins and her son while also preparing for her newborn child.
"She was always happy,” Odom said. “She was kind of going through personal things, just like everybody else, but she was preparing for her new baby. She was excited."
Bibb County Sheriff David Davis told the outlet that Powers and Watkins got into an argument on Saturday night. The sheriff’s department has not immediately returned Oxygen.com’s request for comment.
It’s not clear if Watkins has a lawyer who can speak on her behalf. She is being held without bond.
