Oklahoma Man Is Arrested After Bringing Pregnant 12-Year-Old To Hospital, Calling Her His 'Girlfriend'
“They walked in just like any other couple would be excited to deliver their newborn child,” Tulsa Police Officer Danny Bean said of suspect Juan Miranda-Jara and the 12-year-old girl he allegedly impregnanted.
An Oklahoma man has been arrested after proudly walking into a Tulsa hospital with a 12-year-old girl, who was in labor with his baby.
Tulsa Police said Juan Miranda-Jara, 24, is now facing charges of first-degree rape after he allegedly admitted to being the biological father of the 12-year-old’s baby, according to a statement from the department.
Police said Miranda-Jara accompanied the minor to the midtown Tulsa hospital as she was preparing to give birth to the baby.
“They walked in just like any other couple would be excited to deliver their newborn child,” Tulsa Police Officer Danny Bean told local station KOKI.
Doctors at the hospital called police after noticing the girl’s young age to report a potential rape. When police arrived at the scene, Miranda-Jara allegedly admitted he was the father of the baby and told authorities that he was “in a relationship with the 12-year-old victim that started in October of 2020.”
Bean told the local news station that Miranda-Jara seemed confused about why police would be involved in the birth and believed he would be allowed to go home with the 12-year-old and her newborn.
“We don’t get this kind of call every day,” Bean said. “It certainly was a surprise for everyone involved.”
Police are still trying to determine how Miranda-Jara and the victim knew one another and don’t believe it was a case of incest at this time.
It’s also not clear whether the girl was attending school and, if she was, why the pregnancy hadn’t been reported to authorities earlier.
“We know there are many people in the community who are shocked by this, grossed out by this, disturbed by this, have questions, a whole range of emotions,” Bean told the outlet. “But in time, we will be able to give the community the answers they want. We just don’t have all the answers right now to give them, and we don’t want to compromise the investigation that’s still happening.”
Miranda-Jara had also allegedly been vocal about the pregnancy on social media, posting images of himself and the pregnant 12-year-old on Facebook at what appeared to be a baby shower, according to the news station.
The baby was born healthy and is currently in the custody of child welfare authorities, along with the 12-year-old girl.
Miranda-Jara is scheduled to appear in court on the charges against him on August 26, according to jail records.
He is currently being held on $50,000 bond, People reports.
