Woman And 8-Year-Old Daughter Found Shot To Death In 'Tragic' Double-Murder As Authorities Seek Boyfriend
The woman’s 25-year-old boyfriend, Daniel Oswaldo Lopez, is a person of interest in the case, Wichita authorities said.
A Wichita mother and her 8-year-old daughter were shot to death in their home and the mom's boyfriend is wanted for questioning, police said this week.
Mickayla Sorell, 24, along with her daughter Natalia Sorell Lopez were found dead after a welfare check was conducted at her home. The mother and daughter were both pronounced dead on the scene and had been fatally shot, according to investigators.
Kansas authorities suspect the woman’s boyfriend, 25-year-old Daniel Oswaldo Lopez, may be connected to the slayings and are actively trying to track down the man for questioning.
“Investigators have developed information that leads us to believe that a suspect, Daniel O. Lopez, may have involvement in this shooting,” Capt. Jason Stephens of the Wichita Police Department, told reporters earlier this week. “We are currently looking for him and he is wanted in question [with] reference to this incident.”
Lopez is the biological father to Sorell’s daughter, the Wichita Eagle reported. Investigators believe the slaying occurred sometime late Friday night and authorities suspect Lopez is armed.
“If you know his whereabouts, please call 911 immediately,” the Wichita Police Department added in a statement on March 31. “Lopez should be considered armed and dangerous; please do not attempt to make contact with him.”
The murders marked the 13th and 14th homicides in Wichita so far this year. Detectives said the investigation into the deaths is in its early stages, but suspect Sorell was a victim of domestic violence.
“This is a very sad and tragic case,” police added. “[The Wichita Police Department] continues its thoughts and prayers to the victim's family and others affected by this incident.”
Law enforcement declined to comment further on the case.
Lopez has an extensive criminal record, online jail records show. He was convicted on drug possession charges in 2015, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections. He was also found guilty of forgery and theft charges in 2013. In 2018, Lopez was arrested and convicted on gun charges.
Officials urged anyone with information related to Lopez’s whereabouts to contact 911 or Crime Stoppers at 316-519-2282.
