Missing West Virginia Mom Disappears, Then Friends Start Receiving Utterly Bizarre Messages From Her Facebook Account
Mary Cathleen Haley-Scott texted a friend a picture of her with two black eyes, alleging her estranged husband had beaten her. She vanished shortly afterward.
Family and friends of a missing West Virginia mom are growing increasingly concerned after they received a series of strange messages from her Facebook account after she disappeared.
Mary Cathleen Haley-Scott was reported missing Monday. The 32-year-old was last seen some time on Friday, the same day she sent a photo of herself with black eyes to a fellow member of a domestic violence support group, according to Fox News.
Haley-Scott reportedly sent the message to Krissy Musallam around 2:30 p.m. Friday, telling Musallam she had been “beaten pretty bad” by her estranged husband the week before.
Musallam told her to go to a domestic violence shelter but grew concerned after she was able unable to reach Haley-Scott Saturday. Later that day, Musallam told the news outlet she began to receive a series of odd messages coming from Haley-Scott’s account.
One message sent at 4:32 p.m. said “she is fine” and “she is unstable” and reported that Haley-Scott was in bed asleep. At one point, the person identified themselves as Haley-Scott’s best friend, Steven Vaught.
The increasingly bizarre messages went on to declare that “her husband is a great police officer” and claimed that she had gotten the black eyes from falling down the steps.
The rambling messages also claimed that Haley-Scott had “tried to kill her (sic) self” and had fallen into a lake although she couldn’t swim. They went on to mention "Rural Retreat Lake" and again claimed she had fallen in "She fell in...yes she killed herself. She can't swim."
When Musallam asked why no one had contacted police, the messenger told her "I thought she was k" and "she seemed k she does this," Fox News reports. Later in the series of messages the person claimed to be scared and said they could not talk any more about it.
"She slipped. I'm sure she's fine," the person wrote.
In another eerie exchange, Musallum asked if Haley-Scott was still married, and the person reportedly responded, "she always will be now."
The person writing the messages also claimed that Haley-Scott “lied a lot” and told people “things that was private." The person also mentioned being angry at Haley-Scott because she wouldn't "put my name on" some of the businesses she had owned, according to the news outlet.
In another exchange, the messenger allegedly said Haley-Scott "never made me happy" and had been "talking to some man."
The messages between Musallam and Haley-Scott’s account ended on Sunday.
Sheila Vaught, the wife of Steven Vaught, also spoke with Fox News and said Haley-Scott had been staying with the couple before leaving Tuesday for a work trip in Florida.
“I spoke to Mary on Friday morning, she sounded fine,” Vaught said.
However, Vaught claimed Haley-Scott failed to make the final meeting she had scheduled on Friday.
Raleigh County Sheriff’s deputies have said Haley-Scott was last seen in Raleigh County, West Virginia driving a blue 2020 Kia.
Vaught, Haley-Scott’s mom and other friends also reported receiving strange messages from Haley-Scott’s Facebook account.
The case is made even more complicated because Haley-Scott was a wanted woman when she disappeared.
The West Virginia mom disappeared shortly after she was indicted by a grand jury on Dec. 10 on charges of grand larceny, according to local station WOAY.
Raleigh County Sheriff Scott Van Meter told WVNS that, despite the indictment in Smyth County, Virginia, investigators are still considering it a missing persons case.
The day after she was indicted, her estranged husband William J. Scott was arrested on assault charges which had been filed by her. They had separated sometime in August, Haley-Scott's family told Fox News.
According to Magistrate Dane Little, Scott said he “has not seen his ex-wife in months” and was “very cooperative and polite.”
Scott worked for the West Virginia State Police for 25 years before recently retiring. He now works for the state police as a civilian in motor-vehicle inspections, Fox News reports.
Van Meter has described Scott as fully cooperative in the investigation.
Anyone with information about the missing mom is urged to contact authorities.
