Ex-Boyfriend Of Florida Mom Found Dead In Barn Extradited To Alabama To Face Charges Of Abuse Of A Corpse
Authorities decided to drop the charges against Marcus Spanevelo in Florida and extradite him to Alabama, where his ex-girlfriend Cassie Carli's body was discovered buried in a shallow grave, in an effort to "prosecute the strongest case."
The ex-boyfriend of a Florida mom found dead in a shallow grave earlier this year has been extradited to Alabama to face charges of abusing a corpse.
Marcus Spanevelo, 35, was extradited from the Santa Rosa County Jail in Florida to St. Clair County Jail in Alabama around 6:16 p.m. Thursday night, according to the Pensacola News Journal.
“This charge has been pending since May of this year and a hold has been placed on Marcus Spanevelo while he was in custody in the State of Florida,” the St. Clair District Attorney said in a press release obtained by the news outlet. “On Friday, Oct. 14, 2022, Marcus Spanevelo signed documents agreeing to extradition to the State of Alabama.”

The move comes just one week after charges of destroying evidence and obstructing justice against Spanevelo were dropped by prosecutors in Florida.
“The disappearance and death of Cassie Carli remain under investigation by law enforcement agencies in both Florida and Alabama,” Assistant State Attorney Mark Alderman wrote in court records obtained by Oxygen.com explaining the decision. “In an effort to prosecute the strongest case, and after communicating with law enforcement officers in both states, the Office of the State Attorney believes that in the interest of justice the actions of the Marcus Spanevelo are most appropriately prosecuted in Alabama.”
The body of Spanevelo’s ex-girlfriend, Cassie Carli, was discovered buried in a shallow grave in a barn at a St. Clair, Alabama property linked to Spanevelo in April.
Carli disappeared March 27 after she was supposed to meet Spanevelo for a custody exchange of their child in a restaurant parking lot in Navarre, Florida, according to AL.com.
Not long after she was reported missing by her father, Carli’s vehicle was found abandoned behind the Juana’s Pagodas restaurant with her purse still inside.
A final autopsy report released earlier this month from St. Clair County Coroner Dennis Russell listed the Florida mom’s cause and manner of death as undetermined.
Officials in St. Clair county have said it’s possible additional charges could be filed against Spanevelo at a later date.
If convicted of abusing a corpse, he could face up to 10 years behind bars.
The couple’s 4-year-old daughter was later found safe in Tennessee.
