‘Vengeful’ Texas Man Who Killed Neighbor Over Divorce Feud Sentenced To 45 Years

A Texas man accused of gunning down his neighbor in 2017 after his wife divorced him will spend more than four decades behind bars. 

Hector Arturo Campos, 48, was found guilty by a Harris County jury last Wednesday in the killing of his 53-year-old neighbor Ana Weed more than five years ago, according to court records obtained by Oxygen.com. He was subsequently slapped with a 45-year sentence by District Court Judge Te’ivaBell. 

“Hector Campos is a violent and vengeful man who killed his neighbor simply because they did not get along,” Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg said in a prepared statement on July 1. “Ana Weed, a loving wife, mother and grandmother, is dead and her family is devastated because an angry man with a gun could not control himself.”

On Jan. 24, 2017, Campos fatally shot Weed in “broad daylight” while with her dog in the front yard of her home following a dispute involving the Texas man’s divorce to his former wife, prosecutors said.

At trial, Weed’s relatives testified that Campos had a simmering dispute with Weed tracing back several months prior to the deadly shooting. Family members told the court that the root of the feud stemmed from a family vacation Campos had booked for his then-wife and infant daughter in June 2016. 

“Campos had arranged the trip, then changed his mind and tried to cancel it,” prosecutors said in last week’s press release. “Because of that, Weed drove Campos’ then-wife and the baby to the airport, which apparently angered Campos, who eventually filed for divorce.” 

Months later, Campos, who was detailing his truck in the driveway of his home, confronted Weed in the front yard of her property regarding the whereabouts about his former spouse and daughter. A verbal dispute erupted, causing Weed’s dog to start barking. Campos, who attempted to kick the canine, later shot Weed a single time with a handgun while she tried to retrieve her pet. According to prosecutors, Weed had been wrapping a gift for her grandson at the time of the shooting. She had packing tape in her hand at the time Campos pulled the trigger.

Campos, who claimed self-defense under police questioning, told investigators that he opened fire on his neighbor after she had shoved him and tried to choke him with her packing tape.

During trial, however, prosecutors painted Campos as a cold and calculated killer who was consumed by rage in the wake of his divorce to his spouse.

“He showed no mercy to Ana Weed,” Assistant District Attorney Christopher Condon said following the sentence being delivered. “For this family, every possible joyful occasion will be marred by sorrow, so we’re thankful for the jury’s hard work in bringing them justice.”

Weed’s family also addressed the court during the case’s sentencing phase.

“You took away the life of an incredible and valuable person,” Carmen Guillen, Weed’s sister, said in a victim impact statement. “We will cherish her memory and she will never be forgotten. She lives on through her son and grandchildren.”

Campos appears to have filed motions appealing his case, separate court filings show. He’s being held at a Harris County detention facility, according to online jail records. 

Defense attorney Chip Lewis declined to comment on his former client’s verdict when contacted by Oxygen.com on Tuesday afternoon, indicating that he no longer represents Campos.
