Florida Nurse Found Dead In Driveway In Apparent Murder-Suicide By Firefighter
Officials say that Gregory DePietro parked his car behind Haley Friedel's vehicle, walked up, and fired multiple shots through her window. He then allegedly turned the gun on himself.
A Florida nurse is dead in an apparent murder-suicide, police say.
Haley Friedel, 24, was discovered after officials with the Titusville Police Department responded to reports of shots fired at around 7:00 a.m. on May 12, authorities stated. When officers arrived at Friedel’s residence on the 4000 block of Lakeview Hills Avenue, she was inside a parked vehicle in the driveway, having sustained fatal gunshot wounds.
She was pronounced dead on the scene.
The alleged perpetrator, Gregory DePietro, 32, was found on the lawn nearby, clinging to life following an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
DePietro was transported to a local hospital and succumbed to his injuries at around 10:15 that morning.
The details are slim as to what kind of relationship Friedel and DePietro had, but the police said they knew one another.
“The preliminary investigation revealed DePietro arrived at Friedel’s residence, parked his vehicle behind Friedel’s vehicle, and approached the driver’s side of her locked vehicle,” police stated. “He then fired multiple gunshots into the driver’s side window, striking Friedel multiple times, then immediately turned the gun on himself and fired.”
Authorities have not yet ascertained a motive behind the tragedy.
Prior to his death, DePietro was held in high regard as a member of the Seminole County Fire Department since 2018, according to NBC Orlando affiliate WESH.
“DePietro was in good standing with the department during his tenure here,” said Chief Matt Kinley. “This is a tragic and devastating loss for the family of Haley Friedel and the family of Greg DePietro."
According to a GoFundMe page created to raise funds for the victim’s family, Friedel is described as someone who loved going to the gym and brought joy to many.
“She brought so much love and fun to everyone she met, even for the people who knew her for a short period,” according to the campaign. “Haley had a personality that radiated and shined much like the beautiful sunflower she loved - bringing joy to so many people around her.”
Friedel was a graduate of Astronaut High School and later became a registered nurse through Daytona State College, according to her obituary. She’d recently become a nurse for the Parish Medical Center in Titusville.
“Realizing all those who Haley has touched and deeply impacted has helped our family find comfort in remembering her profound love for life and ever-loving personality,” loved ones wrote on the GoFundMe page.
She is survived by her parents, grandparents, and three sisters.
