Double Murder Of Couple Gunned Down In Mountain Campground Remains A Mystery
The FBI has joined the search for the killer of Utah newlyweds Kylen Schulte, 24, and Crystal Turner, 38, who were fatally shot in La Sal Mountains earlier this month.
Authorities in Utah are scrambling to identify the mystery suspect behind the campsite slaying of a newlywed couple just over a week ago.
Kylen Schulte, 24, and Crystal Turner, 38, were found fatally shot at a camping ground in La Sal Mountains on Aug. 18. A medical examiner confirmed gun blasts were the cause of death.
As of Thusday, no arrests had been made in the puzzling double murder, officials said.
The Grand County Sheriff's Office said this week that the FBI and the Utah Special Bureau of investigation are involved in the investigation.
Authorities, who have asked the public for any assistance, are still narrowing down a five-day timeline preceding Turner and Schulte’s death.
Schulte and Turner were last seen alive leaving a bar in Moab, Utah around 9:30 p.m. on Aug. 13, according to law enforcement. The couple was reported missing days later after not showing up to work. According to relatives, they regularly camped in the area.
Detectives, who have recovered scant evidence from the surrounding area thus far, previously ruled out a murder-suicide.
“We do think it was an outside party,” Grand County Sheriff Steven White told KUTV. “There has not been any firearms recovered from that area at this time.”
Authorities believe the shooting was an "isolated Incident," Capt. Hackwell said, according to KPAX-TV.
Nevertheless, a motive in the couple’s killing is unknown.
On Thursday, a spokesperson for the FBI confirmed with Oxygen.com the agency was providing assistance to local authorities but also declined to comment on the homicide investigation.
County authorities, under mounting public pressure, boosted patrol presence in the La Sal Mountains, despite insisting the public was not in any danger.
Prior to Schulte and Turner’s deaths, the pair had complained to family and friends about a “creepy guy” — a nearby camper — who had unnerved them.
"Kylen and Crystal told close friends that there was a weirdo camping near them that was freaking them out !!!” Sean-Paul Schulte, Kylen's father, posted on Facebook, USA Today reported. "And that they should move campsites. Now they have been missing for over 4 days and nights!"
It’s unclear if the unidentified individual is connected to the couple’s slaying.
“They said they were going to move,” Calvert, Schulte’s aunt, told KPAX-TV. “They were going to go pack up and move their campsite. That he was still creeping them out.”
Authorities haven’t released additional information. The Grand County Sheriff’s Office didn’t respond to Oxygen.com’s questions about the ongoing investigation this week.
Schulte and Turner lived together in Moab, Utah, according to family. Schulte is originally from Montana. Turner hails from Arkansas. A vigil was held for the couple last weekend.
