Woman Accused Of Allowing 24-Year-Old Man Be In A Relationship With Her 12-Year-Old Daughter, Even Throwing Them A Baby Shower
Juan Miranda-Jara was arrested after showing up to a hospital with a pregnant 12-year-old, but the victim's mother, Desiree Castaneda is now also facing charges.
An Oklahoma mother has been accused of allowing her 12-year-old daughter to carry on a relationship with a 24-year-old man, even throwing a baby shower to celebrate her pre-teen daughter’s pregnancy and providing the couple with condoms, authorities said.
Desiree Castaneda, 33, is now facing charges of enabling child sex abuse and child neglect after the 12-year-old girl gave birth in an Oklahoma hospital earlier this month.
The baby’s father, Juan Miranda-Jara, 24, had reportedly brought the girl to the hospital on July 14 and is now facing charges of first-degree rape in connection with the case after hospital staff alerted police.
“The investigation revealed that the victim’s mother and family members were aware of the relationship between the victim and Miranda-Jara,” Tulsa Police said in a statement. “The family permitted the relationship, and there are photos of the family throwing a baby shower for the victim and the suspect.”
Authorities said Castaneda had also allegedly provided Miranda-Jara with condoms, local station KOTV reports.
The victim’s father is currently in prison serving a 12-year sentence for first-degree rape in an unrelated case, police said.
Miranda-Jara allegedly told police he had been “in a relationship” with the 12-year-old victim since October of 2020, police said at the time of his arrest.
Tulsa Police Officer Danny Bean told Oxygen.com last week that it “is not clear” how Miranda-Jara had known the 12-year-old.
The baby, according to Bean, was born healthy at a Tulsa-area hospital.
The Tulsa County District Attorney’s Office declined to discuss the case with Oxygen.com, citing a department policy not to comment on pending cases.
Miranda-Jara has been appointed a public defender and is scheduled to appear for his preliminary hearing on Aug. 26, according to court records obtained by Oxygen.com.
Jail records indicate that Castaneda is being held at the Tulsa County Jail on $50,000 bond.
