'The Monster Is Back': Man Allegedly Held 5-Year-Old Neighbor Captive For Days
Neighbors tipped off police to the suspected abduction after hearing 5-year-old Maggie Milsap screaming for help.
A Detroit man is accused of abducting a 5-year-old girl and holding her captive at his duplex for several days, according to police.
Dangelo Cash Clemons, 30, was charged with kidnapping and child enticement after the young girl was found in his home last month.
On June 30, Detroit police officers were dispatched to a property in the northwest corner of the city around 10:30 p.m. regarding a possible child endangerment call, when neighbors heard a young girl screaming.
Authorities later rescued 5-year-old Maggie Milsap from Clemons’ duplex, where she was allegedly being held against her will. She and her father lived in a neighboring unit. A dead body, believed to be the girl’s father, Colby Milsap, was also found at the girl's duplex.
The remains are still being identified, officials said. Foul play may be suspected, according to the Detroit Free Press. Thus far, police have been tight-lipped about the ongoing case.
"We're right in the middle of everything," Detective James Kraszewski, of the Detroit Police Department, told the newspaper this week. "We're reviewing all our paperwork and evidence we have now."
The detective, who called the girl’s neighbors the “true heroes,” applauded them for quickly notifying authorities regarding the alleged abduction.
"This could not have happened if those folks didn't get involved," Kraszewski added. "They put their own lives in jeopardy to try to save that girl. If it hadn't been for them, God knows what could have happened to that little girl."
Investigators suspect that Clemons abducted the young girl from her home and fled back to his duplex with the 5-year-old. According to charging documents, she was rescued by law enforcement after she screamed to neighbors for help.
"She goes, 'Help me, help me please,'" Raynell Jones told WJBK. "When the guy walks back up she says, 'The monster is back!' and then she closes the curtain."
Jones, who is also Maggie Milsap’s babysitter, quickly dialed 911 after hearing her the girl's frantic pleas for help.
The puzzling investigation has rattled investigators.
"I’ve never ever come across a case like this ever," Kraszewski also told WJBK. "This will go with me until the end."
The 5-year-old girl is currently in foster care in Texas, WJBK reported.
“All allegations like these confirm why we all do this challenging work,” Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said in a statement in June. “We must protect our children by all lawful means necessary.”
Clemons was also charged with assaulting, resisting, or obstructing an officer resulting in serious impairment.
He was arraigned in 36th District Court on July 3. The 30-year-old was booked into Andrew C. Baird Detention Facility on July 5, according to online jail records. Clemons is being held on a $22,500 bond. He’s is scheduled to appear back in court on Aug. 8.
Earl Washington, Clemons’ defense attorney, wasn’t immediately available for comment on Thursday.
