Ohio Teen Found Guilty Of Murdering 22-Year-Old Pregnant Mom
Keyona Murray, who was in her room with two small children at the time of the shooting, was reportedly not the intended target.
An Ohio man has been convicted in the deadly shooting of a 22-year-old pregnant woman.
Brandon W. Leigh, then 17, issued a fatal gunshot from an alley behind Keyona Murray's house on Feb. 16, 2018, according to a press release from the Montgomery County, Ohio prosecutor’s office.
It was around 8:00 p.m. when the shooting occurred, and the pregnant mother was in her bedroom with her 2-year-old nephew and 2-year-old daughter, local outlet Dayton 24/7 Now reported. The bullet hit her in the head. She was rushed to the hospital, but both she and her unborn child died from her injuries, according to the press release.
Leigh was arrested about a week later on Feb. 23, 2018, local TV station WHIO-TV reported. He was charged with murder, involuntary manslaughter, having weapons while under disability, and improperly discharging a firearm at or into a habitation, according to the press release.
Despite being 17 at the time of the killing, the presiding judge ordered him to be tried as an adult, according to the release.
Leigh did mean to shoot into Murray’s home, but neither she nor her unborn baby were not his intended targets, Dayton detective Zachary Farkas told PEOPLE. It has not been reported who the intended target was.
The jury declared him guilty on all counts on March 1. Leigh’s sentencing is scheduled for April 23, according the Dayton Daily News, a local newspaper.
His attorney, David Miles, could not be immediately reached for comment.
