Teen Boy Allegedly Kills Girlfriend's Father After Sneaking Into Their Home
The 17-year-old boy was also injured during an altercation between him and his girlfriend's father, Dezmon Hamilton.
A man was killed after his daughter’s teen boyfriend allegedly shot him during an altercation, police say.
34-year-old Dezmon Hamilton confronted his 14-year-old daughter’s boyfriend after the boy used a ladder to sneak into his house on July 18, according to ABC’s WBRZ 2 News. The father and the 17-year-old boy, who cannot be named because of his age, exchanged gunfire. Hamilton was alerted to the boy's presence by a neighbor who saw the ladder.
Both Hamilton and the teen were armed, though it was not clear who fired the first shot.
Hamilton died in the hospital.
The boy was injured but survived. He was later arrested for second-degree murder, illegal use of a weapon, and illegal possession of a stolen firearm.
“The daughter had a boyfriend over, and the father came home,” a neighbor told WBRZ 2 News. “And there was an altercation.”
According to local authorities, it was not the first time the teenagers had seen one another covertly; the father tried to keep the boy away before.
Authorities stated the suspect used a ladder to climb into his girlfriend’s bedroom window at a previous residence as well.
“This has been an ongoing issue,” said Zachary Police Chief David McDavid. “They [Hamilton] were hoping to stop it, but it continued.”
“Dezmon brought his downstairs and began talking to him,” McDavid continued. “An argument ensued.”
Hamilton was a native of Zachary, Louisiana, and the supervisor at an Exxon Lubrication station in Port Allen. He had plans to open a snowball stand serving crushed ice as a gift to his hometown, according to his obituary.
As shown by WBRZ, the structure now remains unfinished.
"It's a tragic loss," McDavid said. "We lost a good man who was an up-and-coming entrepreneur who was trying to make this community better."
Hamilton leaves behind four children.
