Alex Murdaugh, Whose Son And Wife Were Recently Murdered, Shot In Head
Alex Murdaugh, the patriarch of prominent South Carolina family, has allegedly been shot in the head on a rural road in Hampton County.
Alex Murdaugh, the powerful patriarch of a South Carolina family, was shot in the head today while attending to a malfunction in his car on a rural road, according to the "Post and Courier". He has been airlifted to the Medical University of South Carolina hospital, where he is being treated. News of the shooting was first reported by FITSNews.
Nick Griffin, an attorney for the Murdaugh family told "The Island Packet" that "a truck passed Murdaugh, turned around, and came back and shot him. Griffin didn’t know how many shots. Murdaugh has allegedly been able to communicate in the hospital with his brother Randy. .
The Murdaughs have found themselves thrust into the public spotlight after Paul Murdaugh, 22, and his mother Margaret, 52, were found shot to death on one of the family's many properties. Alex Murdaugh discovered the bodies of his wife and son on June 7 and placed a call to 911 to report the apparent murders.
Paul Murdaugh was facing three felonies in connection to a 2019 boating incident that killed 19-year-old Mallory Beach at the time of his death. There has been speculation that he was the intended target of the double homicide.
Newly released court documents allege that Connor Cook, who was onboard the night of the crash, was pressured, while in the hospital with a broken jaw, by Alex Murdaugh not to tell the police that Paul was operating the boat.
“I was told for one by Alex Murdaugh that I didn’t need to tell anyone who was driving," Cook replied when asked by attorneys if he was “upfront with the officers” after the accident, adding that the Murdaugh patriarch told Cook "that everything was going to be all right. I just needed to keep my mouth shut and tell them I didn't know who was driving and that he's got me," Cook stated according to the deposition.
Following the news of June's double homicide, South Carolina Law Enforcement Division reopened an investigation into the 2015 death of teenager Stephen Smith, who was found dead on the side of the road in 2015 about 10 miles from the Murdaugh compound.
