Episode 5 - 40th birthday/Camp-out
Tuesday, May 13, 2008
The best of my birthday party was knowing that we were going to raise the money to
get a wheelchair for a little girl. You can see during the episode that it wasn’t
just a birthday party, it was a birthday party/fundraiser. I’m not big on parties
or celebrating me. I’m not the celebratory type. I don’t even open presents. I have
unopened presents from last Christmas still in my closet. I’m just not the celebratory
type. But to be able to give something to a little girl, that made the event even
more special.
Now that I'm 40, I can look back on my years in sports, and my years with family.
If I had to choose, I would say my twenties were my favorite decade. Because you’re
young and naïve, and you learn from experience. And experience really shapes your
thirties. I would definitely say my twenties were my favorite. And I don’t regret
anything that’s happened to me, because everything that’s happened has propelled me
to who I am today. For an athlete like myself, that’s in the prime of your career,
though, in your twenties.
But now that I'm in my forties, you know what I would've done with the kids on their
fishing trip? Well, for starters, we would’ve caught some fish. That’s what it’s called:
a fishing trip. We would’ve had a good time, though. At any age.
