Episode 5 - 40th birthday/Camp-out
Tuesday, May 13, 2008
Watching Deion's 40th birthday party brought back a lot of great memories. In all
the years we've been together, Deion had never accepted a party. I would always try
to throw a party, get some friends together, and he would always be such a sourpuss,
because he really didn’t know how to receive. It’s all about his ego. He’s a man,
he’s so macho, he’s so used to giving and providing. He doesn’t know how to receive,
and he has a really big problem with that. So, for him to accept this party was really
special for me, and it was great to see it again.
I am very much a giver. And Deion doesn’t receive well. For a person who doesn’t receive
well, being on the other end of that, it’s like a slap in the face because you’re
not receiving anything in return. So, when this episode was filmed, you can see all
the planning and executing and going through the entire party, seeing everything come
together, from the people there, to his friends, to our family, to the cake, to absolutely
everything. And for him to smile on that stage and to be like, “wow, thanks.” He said
a little more than that, but to have that appreciation made it all worthwhile to me.
Meanwhile, back at the house, I still have to deal with everyone "watering the plants"
in the same way. Nothing has changed since the episode, and it happens all the time.
All the time. Deion even encourages me to try to “water the plants”. How nasty is
that? I mean, c’mon! He says, “c’mon P, no one’s watching.” Like I’m going to just
squat down here? It’s just nasty. Why would you enjoy that? I think it’s a control
thing. To say, “I can do what I want, when I want, where I want.” I think that’s it.
It has to be it. And also rubbing it in my face because I can’t.
And speaking of roughing it, this week was my first solo camping trip with the kids.
You saw how that turned out. While we were out there, Chef Ron brought us everything
you need to eat well outdoors. Hot dogs, hamburgers, marshmallows for s’mores. All
the standard cook-out food. But we did leave the beans alone! We left them alone for
obvious reasons.
