Episode 4 - Prime Time Romance/What a Woman Wants
Wednesday, May 07, 2008
Don't let my advice to Bucky fool any of you. I'm an extremely romantic guy, and I
definitely let Pilar know. I do so many romantic things for her, I wouldn't even know
where to begin. I bought Pilar a Hummer, covered it in roses, and wrapped up in a
big red bow. That was for Valentine’s Day, and that was pretty romantic. You can never
go wrong with roses, rose petals all over the bedroom, little notes here and there,
little cards here and there. It's all about surprising her. It's all about keeping
her on her toes, and showing her you care. It’s not about “stuff” anymore between
us. It used to be about buying her things, but it’s not about that anymore, it’s about
her and me. It’s about my being there for her, and letting her know it.
This week, we saw Bucky and Deiondra start dating, and as a parent, you have a lot
of strong feelings when this stage begins. Because I’m a man, and I know men, I can
still remember what I wanted when I was that age. And so, as a man, you want your
daughter to be home by ten, but you want your son to be out until ten-thirty. As a
man, you just want to know: “son, you having a good time?” “yeah, dad, we cool” “alright,
then go out and get your extra thirty minutes.” It’s just a man thing. And, to get
right to the point, a boy can’t get pregnant. He can have a kid, but he can’t get
pregnant. And he can defend himself. Not that a woman can’t, of course she can, but
as a parent, you’re a little more apprehensive for your daughter.
To finish my thought from the episode, here’s my advice for all the dating men out
there: you’re going to have to finish how you start, so however you start, you’re
going to have to finish that way, too. Be you. If you’re not Romeo, then don’t pretend
to be Romeo, because you’re going to have to be consistent. Don’t send a representative
on your first date. Be you. You send a representative, and sooner or later she’s going
to meet you. But she’s fallen in love with your representative, so it’s going to go
haywire after that. Be you, and do what you do, but be careful how you do it. I mean,
my first date with Pilar, we went to Popeye’s, so it was all uphill after that. We
started to go through the drive-thru, but then we decided to walk in. That’s how it
started with us.
